Student Accommodation- Plymouth Polytechnic South West

Following a design competition the practice was awarded the commission of realising its scheme which made full use of the long, narrow sloping site adjacent to existing University accommodation on Gibbon Street behind Plymouth City Library.

The development comprises 14No 5 and 6 storey self-contained accommodation blocks providing 502 study/bedrooms in total of which 162 have full ensuite facilities. The residential accommodation is further divided into clusters of 6 or 8 bedroomed self-contained flats each with a communal kitchen/dining/lounge area all sited around a formal central landscaped concourse which provides access to communal multi-function facilities below ground including lecture theatre, seminar rooms, refectory, bar/lounge and car park located over 2 underground levels. Vehicular access to the car park is via a ramped entrance located adjacent to the Regent Street car park.

Our service onb this project included a full archiotectural service (RIBA stages A to L inclusive) assisted by private QS, Structural Engineers and M&E Engineers appointed by ourselves. The contract was let under a standard JCT contract with full BOQ’s and was completed in August 1994 at a build cost of £14.5m
